3 Things Thursday in A B C Order

***3 Things Thursday***

It’s Three Things Thursday once again and time to share three things I am working on today – and they just happen to fit the A B C pattern!  🙂

In case you aren’t familiar with it, alternative text, or alt text, is the phrase or sentence (or multiple sentences) attached to an image online to comply with accessible web design, but also to help those with visual impairments understand what images are about when they can’t see them. A screen reader will search for alt text and reads it if it’s there; otherwise, the screen reader will skip the image.

In my job as a senior editor, my current project is to review batches of lessons for a client who has created dozens of courses for a new online curriculum. In order to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility requirements, the editing team is now reviewing THOUSANDS  of images within these courses. We either write new alt text or review what has already been entered by course writers or freelance writers to make sure it follows established alt text best practices.

For instance, if you hover over this image below, or double/right click and look at the image info, you should see the alt text tag I applied to it (or it says in the image info, associated text). And yes, sadly, that is my injury from about 10 days ago, and it’s still very painful! I sliced my finger right next to the fingernail when I reached into the dish drainer and didn’t see the blender’s spiral blade sitting there, drying.

If you think about how often you have to use your left middle finger to type e, d, and c keys, and your job, blogging, or even just online socializing requires typing for part or most of the day, you can imagine how painful this is! I have had to keep it covered in a bandage and have retrained my ring finger to type those keys. A bit awkward and slow-going, but it’s working for now!

Injured middle finger, accidentally sliced by blender blade.
                  My “owee” finger injury!

Well, obviously, right? 😉 It has helped a bit by having a daily theme, like today’s “Three Things Thursday.” It helps me focus more on what to post about, especially if my brain is feeling a bit foggy. On my Words of Encouragement blog, I share (usually) daily devotional thoughts, so that is also more concrete.

A new strategy I need to implement is getting my blog posts ready the night before, so I can just review them in the morning and publish them earlier. Then I can visit my blogging groups on Facebook to share them and get a jump on my THIRD thing …

Finally, I have been working on catching up with commenting on blogs. One of the benefits of participating in blog groups on Facebook is the opportunity to share blog posts and both give and receive views, shares, and comments in return. I know I truly appreciate all those who take time to read, share, and comment on my blog posts, so I am striving to reciprocate here, as well.

I’m a bit behind, due to my finger injury, but I’m doing my best.  It also helps that I have started using a notepad to track my groups and comment threads!

As I mentioned, on this blog, and my other blog, Words of Encouragement, I likewise need to start replying to all of you who leave comments, and I confess I haven’t been good about doing that. Just another thing to work on!

  …  …

So what about YOU?

What are you doing this Thursday?

Do you have a strategic plan for the day?

  1. Blog commenting is the #1 way in which I generated traffic on my blog early on in my blog career!! Now I comment a little less, but I still comment because in the end, the overall goal for me and blogging is… TO meet awesome new people!

  2. 3 things Thursday sounds like loads of fun Karen, sorry about your finger though. While reading your post I suddenly realized how important a middle finger actually is, LOL. Hope it feels better soon

  3. These are some really good tips. I usually leave the alt text blank but now i am going to work on correcting it.

  4. I like to have small, manageable goals. I go through phases when I’m really good at making lists or else I don;t do it at all. I’d love to find more stability.

  5. I love this 3 things Thursday idea — very fun and a great way to keep yourself accountable every week. A tip for keeping track of facebook groups — use the “collections” feature — it’s changed my life. I have a post about it on my site under the blog life tab if you’re interested in learning more about it.

  6. I’ve been struggling with blogging consistency now that I’m back to school. I like the idea of having specific things to blog about each day of the week.

  7. I love commenting on other people’s blogs because it gives me an opportunity to meet many awesome people in the virtual world. Also, it helps me to keep myself updated as what’s trending in the blogging world!

  8. Interesting – thanks for sharing! Thursday I went away to a lovely part of Devon and went on a cliff railway – a bit different to a normal working Thursday!

  9. You are awesome! You had a list on the things you want to do for the day. This is something I’m not good at. I should try doing this too! 🙂
