Yeah – I’m Going to Have to Go Ahead and DE-CLUTTER!

I already knew this. Clutter has been my nemesis most of my adult life.

As my family members and I have been going through decades of *stuff* at our childhood home since my Mom passed away – a task that has fallen mostly to one sister and her family who live closest to the house  – it’s obvious where I picked up this habit!

My Mom had “treasures” dating back to the 1940s, when she was in high school. The gargantuan task of de-cluttering that house to prepare to place it on the market  (now that both parents are gone and the sale of the house will yield our shared “inheritance” per their stipulations) had already convinced me that I need to undertake a similar process NOW and not leave it to my family members after I’m gone.

The events of today further confirmed the importance of de-cluttering, organizing, rearranging, and otherwise condensing and simplifying my life! This necessity goes WAY beyond merely de-cluttering my desk, as I blogged about recently.

Have you ever had to find important papers and tax-related information from previous years? How about other essential items? I thought I was organized – I have a file drawer and file boxes for the majority of that kind of stuff. Wouldn’t you know it, though, that I located the information for every year EXCEPT the two I need? I just can’t figure out what could possibly have happened to those two folders or any of the related paperwork.

My husband and I lost HOURS today, just sifting through boxes and bins of papers and file folders, all to no avail. We discovered we can request a free transcript of past years to obtain the info we need – but it’s still so frustrating to NOT be able to find what we know is here – SOMEWHERE!!

So what did we learn today?

  • MUST de-clutter and organize MUCH better!
  • Keep ALL tax-related paperwork in ONE location, clearly marked.
  • Likewise, organize related paperwork and other items, and keep them together in ONE location.
  • THROW stuff out – really – it’s OK to NOT hold onto catalogs from years ago, that expired that year.

Yeah, definitely time for some EARLY spring cleaning around here. What about you? I do hope I’m NOT the only one who has this problem!

  1. Thanks Karen Lee. Yes, I’m sure you’ll feel a lot “lighter” once the job is done. Last year I did some major paper shredding! It was so worth the time. 🙂 Cheers, Thea

  2. Well, I already told you the story of the “Truth Box.” This article just shows how important it is to keep up on that, and THAT is an area I really need to get better at!!

I will say, however, that I do enjoy going through the “clutter” sometimes. If you’ve ever been in one of the older antique shops, you know what I mean. Usually the shopkeeper is an older individual, and the store is less than ordered. However, going through some of that can yield some amazing finds.
So it is with personal de-cluttering as well. We can find some things we thought were long gone when going through our “files.” It’s much like our own personal treasure hunt.

So what’s the point of this rather long-winded comment?

De-cluttering can be fun if gone about with the right attitude. 🙂 Thanks for the article. I’ll be tweeting it!
