Striving for Excellence

Happy third Sunday in July! Today we were blessed with a break in the oppressive heat and humidity, with temps of about 80 instead of upper 90s, and low humidity. It actually feels on the chilly side this evening, in the upper 50s or low 60s! It’s what I call “deliciously chilly” after such horrible heat.

Today’s UBC blogging prompt was to discuss dreams and goals for the future. I found one that I originally wrote in January 2012, and decided to revive/revise it here. Most of the original post is still true today, with the wonderful addition of now being a grandmother!

I dream a dream of excellence. The basic definition for excellence is that it is “the state or quality of excelling or being exceptionally good” and demonstrating qualities or characteristics of merit and virtue.  My dream, therefore, is to strive for excellence as a person in my various roles in relationship to others, as well as in my life’s educational and career goals. Closely related to this dream is my desire for excellence and blessing in the lives of others.

As a daughter, I dream of one day seeing my beloved parents again, now that they have both passed on to their eternal reward with the Lord they served their entire lives – Dad on September 2, 2002, and Mom on July 7, 2011.

As a mother of four young adult “kids,” I, of course, want them to be healthy, and find happiness and fulfillment in their lives, whether that’s through relationships, friendships, careers, achieving goals, or any other worthy endeavor.  I want them to reflect on the good memories, learn from the bad, and remember that even though I wasn’t a perfect mother, and their father and I divorced, I did my best and have always loved them and will continue to do so.

As a grandmother, I want to see my beautiful 10-month-old granddaughter (and any more who come along) grow in grace, healthy and happy, to pursue her own dreams.

As a wife of a wonderful husband I was blessed to meet through online dating about 10 1/2 years ago, and with whom I celebrated seven years of marriage on Feb. 11th this year, I want to be an excellent wife, companion, friend and confidante. I haven’t arrived, and occasionally fall miserably short of fulfilling that dream, but I’m thankful for his love, patience, forgiveness, and commitment to me and our marriage.

As a sibling, and an aunt, I want to see my sisters, brother, and their families live happy, healthy, blessed lives in whatever way is meaningful to each of them.

As a friend, I want to see my friends likewise be in good health, and find the happiness and provision they need and want in life.

As a business associate, I want to see my fellow acquaintances and colleagues find success and prosper in their respective businesses.

As a graduate student, I want to see my classmates succeed in their endeavors.

Others may dream of fame and fortune. If those ever occur for me, I wouldn’t turn them down, but first I will continue to strive for excellence as a person and in my various endeavors.

What kind of dream do you have for yourself and your loved ones?

Everybody can be great.  Because anybody can serve.  You don’t have to have a college degree to serve.  You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve.  You only need a heart full of grace.  A soul generated by love.

~Martin Luther King, Jr.

  1. I love the way you center on your own growth in your dreams. I believe that we’re here on earth to learn through our experiences. Your goals are so right for this purpose. Your dreams inspire me to be a better person.
