My Favorite Pets-One Black Lab and Six Cats!
I am once again in a conundrum trying to choose only ONE “favorite” item (as in last night’s post about my “best” meal I’ve ever cooked). The NaBloPoMo writing prompt for today is to discuss my favorite pet.
I couldn’t choose between our pets to name any one as my favorite, although since Kita is the only dog, she wins the title as my favorite dog! Kita (short for Nikita, or her full name as a purebred black lab is Nikita Ebony in her papers) is now about 12 1/2 years old. She’s slowing down and displaying some signs of old age – much like me, with joint pain – we commiserate some days when our hips hurt and it’s painful to move around.
We also had a scare with Kita over the summer – she was diagnosed with cancer and had the malignant tumor removed. Our vet was fairly certain she got it all, and Kita seems to be recovering well – but as we know all too well, you just never know with cancer! So meanwhile, we’ll just enjoy her while we have her with us!
The next oldest pet is Mack, our 7 y.o. Maine coon cat. We adopted him from the local humane society – or I should say, he adopted US after he stepped out of his cage and settled right into my arms and wrapped his paws around my husband Dave’s fingers when he started to pet Mack! Mack goes by a number of nicknames, including Mackster and Mr. Mack, among others.
THEN … we have our other five cats. They showed up as a litter of feral kittens in our back yard, three years ago. They were actually smaller than the big gray squirrels that roam around the yard and steal bird seed. We decided to use a safe trap to catch the kittens, since we couldn’t handle the thought of these little guys living outside with winter approaching. It took most of the month of October 2009, but eventually we caught all five of them.
Dave even built a “kitty condo” where we could keep them for a few weeks or so, until we had a chance to get them to a vet for shots and checkups, and work on “socializing” them. We eventually learned we had two males and three females.
In their kitty condo, three years ago – that’s Lulu on the top shelf, and in the bottom kitten pile, Tiger is the gray striped kitten; Cali is the calico; Tabby (Mr. Tabs) is the yellow tabby draped over Cali; and Smokey is the Lynx point kitten on the right. The “girls” are Lulu, Tiger, and Cali; the “boys” are Tabs and Smokey.
We had thought, initially, that we would just keep a couple of them … but they kind of stole our hearts and we couldn’t part with any of them! I kept track of our feral kitten saga in an album on Facebook and continue to add pictures of our fur babies, who are of course adult cats now – but we still call them kittens!
This is the normal scene when Dave gets home from work – treats for everyone!
They are certainly kittens with purrr-sonality, and they – along with Kita and Mack – bring a lot of joy, laughter, and companionship into our lives. I can’t imagine NOT having pets, especially since I work from home; it’s nice having company during the day while Dave is at work!
How about you? Any favorite pets in your household?
